What’s the Secret to a Safe Haven Home?

A friend reminded me recently that not everyone lives with peace in their home.  Sometimes relationships are strained and can even be abusive at times.  Let’s face it.  None of us is perfect, and when left to our own devices, we can make the lives of others in our household miserable.

So, how do we get around that?  How can we create a peaceful home?

My friend said it right.  Our home is peaceful when the Holy Spirit resides there.  What a great reminder!  It really boils down to our decision to live faithfully according to our King Jesus and God’s Holy Word.

With Him as the heartbeat of our home, we will have peace there.

Romans 15:13Image Source

But, what do you do if not everyone in your home is a Christian?  What if a family member is lost and doesn’t know the Lord – or care?  How do we endure?

I’ve pondered this often since the discussion with my friend that day.  You may feel at a loss.  Do you feel you can control the environment at home only to the extent that you can control that lost soul?  That was my first thought, too, which can’t be right.

I can see how that thought might leave you without hope.  We serve the God of all hope.  He doesn’t leave us hopeless.  He is our hope!

When we follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, we can block Satan’s influence in our home that spills from our lost loved one.  No matter what they do, we can treat them with God’s love and kindness.

But, what if they don’t deserve love and kindness?

It’s not about deserving.  We don’t deserve God’s love and kindness, either.  He offers His grace – to those who love Him.  So, can you offer grace to your loved one, as well?

It’s about compassion for the person who doesn’t know what we know…rather, Who we know.  Until they know the Lord,

They just. don’t. know.

Nor do they understand where we’re coming from in our beliefs, our faith.

Here’s how to make a difference:

#1: Pray

Yes, ask God to fix it.  Continue asking.  It’s not that He didn’t hear you the first time or that He’s stubborn and doesn’t want to answer your prayer or that He needs reminding.  He answers his children who are faithful and who offer our earnest prayers.  He hears our hearts crying out.

I’m not saying to repeat a rote prayer over and over again.  I’m saying to repeat His promises back to Him in your prayers to show your faithfulness to Him and your faith in Him alone to answer your prayer.

While you pray for this each day, wait patiently at His feet.  He knows you are waiting, and He will bless you in other ways while you wait.  Through those other blessings, He’s communicating to you that He’s working, even when you can’t see it yet.

#2:  Create a faith atmosphere.

This part is more for you than for the lost, but it can impact them, as well.  God’s Word speaks through His music every day, even to the lost.

Play the music of God’s word in your home.  It encourages you, and it fills your rooms with His love and peace.

His blessings to you for a peaceful home~

What is Life Without Panic?

Do you think of yourself as courageous?  Do you forge ahead through life without abandon, no matter what’s happening around you?  Or, do you sometimes panic?  What terrifies you?

It’s hard to be strong every day, especially when life gets hard.  Ugly days come all too often.  Amen?

courageous-deut-31-6

I promise, y’all.  I was at this point in writing this post, when HH came in the door with the mail.  In it was a card from a dear 2 a.m. friend, D. She is one of my friends I’d call for help, even at 2 a.m.

She shared the lyrics to this song in her card, so of course I cried and went straight to YouTube to find it.  I had to share it with you.  God sent it, special delivery, at just the perfect moment.  He is awesome – every day!

Only one day before receiving the card from D, another 2 a.m. friend (G) and I discussed this next verse by phone.  How it gives us confidence that we WILL see His goodness in all our life situations (good, bad, or ugly) while we are living.  And, how we pray we’ll see His goodness in the lives of our family members soon!

Yet I am confident that I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. (Psalm 27:13)

Can I hear another Amen?  We stand on His promises.  And, He is faithful.

In the verse following, God gives us more confidence.  (You’ve most likely seen it before.)

Wait patiently for the Lord.  Be brave and courageous.  Yes, wait patiently for the Lord. (Psalm 27:14)

I hope that song and God’s Word encourage you as much as they do me.  And…I stand in awe of His presence…His mercy…His perfect timing…every day.

Isn’t it nice to know our Lord goes with us and will never forsake us?  During times of a trial, what’s your go-to verse?

Blessings~

How to Make FALL PILLOWS from Thrift Store Shirts

If you were around the last two years, you saw fall home decor made from thrift store sweaters.  Click the images below for posts you’d like to review.

Fall Flannel Pillows DIY

Several years ago, I pulled HH’s pin-point dress shirt from the stack that was headed for donation.  I made a pillow in only 15 minutes, and we still enjoy using it (Men’s Shirt Pillow DIY).   If that’s not enough to convince you that you can be a thrift store remix queen, one final thrifted redo should do the trick – the DIY Pillow From a Thrifted Chico’s Jacket.

free-videos-herePillows made from thrifted shirts, sweaters, and jackets are the easiest and most rewarding DIY!  Why is the fabric for men’s shirts so much smoother and nicer to the touch than women’s clothing?

After helping Spunky Daughter with a front door set-up for fall, I realized how lacking my supply is for fall pillows (indoor and out).  I visited our local Salvation Army store for some fast remedies.

I came home with several plaid shirts and sweaters in earthy, fall colors.

After making the video, I continued sewing the remaining pillows for SD’s porch bench and our porch seating.

The orange sweater was so fun to make!  It’s very easy to invert the sweater and stitch along three sides as explained with the green sweater in the video.  After inverting, pin five ten-inch ribbon sections to the top edge on front and back.

Aren’t the ribbons fun?

These pillows were in all types of configurations until SD took the two she wanted for her bench – the green sweater to the left and the green plaid to the right.

I made the green sweater pillow with vintage buttons along the top edge that connect the opening through buttonholes.

The back side has more vintage buttons – non working and for decoration alone.

There are more new pillows on the swing, which we’ll discuss another day.

I’ll have that “how to” for you soon.

SD sent this picture of her porch bench last night.  She has plenty of leaves there – always, broom or no broom.  😉

Do you need fall porch pillows?  Is it time to visit your nearest thrift store?

Why You Should Become a Pest

Can you believe God wants you to be a pest?  Yep.  He welcomes pestering.  Look what He says in this passage.  Then the Lord said,

Learn a lesson from this unjust judge.  Even he rendered a just decision in the end.
So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people
who cry out to him day and night?  Will he keep putting them off?
I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly!  But when the Son of Man returns,
how many will he find on the earth who have faith?  (Luke 18:6-8)

A widow had pestered the unjust judge day after day.  He didn’t care about her, but in order to get her to leave him alone, he saw to it that she got justice.

God is so good to us.  He is a good, good Father!

We must keep our faith strong by leaning on God’s promises that we’ve seen each Sunday over the last several weeks.

We must keep our eyes on the Lord and His promises, and our good Father will get us through.

He Delivers

When God takes longer than you expect to answer your prayers, do you doubt Him?  Or, do you relax, understanding that God works in His own timing?

He answers prayers in ways we sometimes don’t quite understand.  And, hear this:  He gives us far better than what we asked.  (At least, that’s been my experience.)

ask-and-given-luke-11-9

The promise in this passage is powerful!

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.  (Psalm 34:17-19)

Now, that’s another promise we can cling to!

We ALL have junk we’re dealing with.  If you think you’re alone – the only one with troubles – you’re mistaken.  These are a few of what’s on my prayer list recently for friends and their families – and sometimes acquaintances.

A child hooked on drugs – and/or selling.

A prodigal.

Alcoholism.

Breast cancer.

Divorce.

The list goes on and on.   And, He knows them all.

God is working…

Thankfully, HE IS…So We Don’t Have To Be

Are you tired?  Do you feel like you constantly struggle through life?

finding-answers-faith-by-pndPatricia Neely-Dorsey

Where do you go to find answers?  The Lord answers all questions.

Because He is.

Contemporary Christian music is my favorite music to listen to while driving, and Mark Schultz is a gifted artist I listen to often.  Some of his older songs still profoundly minister to me.  His music is often balm to what ails because God’s truth is wrapped in every word.

We could never be all that God is!  Doesn’t that relieve the pressure from having to “be this” or “be that”?  We can rest.

BECAUSE HE IS

Yes, He is…He was…and He always will be.

Let us praise the Lord with gladness!
