City on a Southern Hill

Someone from my home town shared a video on Facebook that I want to show you today.  Have you seen the footage on the news of the tornadoes across South Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia?  There is devastating damage to homes and businesses – so much to rebuild.

Parts of my home town were hit by one of the tornadoes, their second within three years.  Those I know personally are fine, but sadly, four people in the area died.

This video footage was taken before there was any tornado damage.  My home town, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is a city on a hill.

God of This City [Hattiesburg, Ms] from HR Sweat on Vimeo.

After watching the video, I started thinking about the fact that Mississippi is the buckle of the Bible belt.  It’s in the center of the southern strip of states with heavy populations of faith.

All across this country, there’s beauty.  And there’s corruption.  Yet, many are God’s faithful people – both here in my state, in your own state, and across our country.

Matthew 5.14

If I looked solely at how the media portrays our country, I would be disheartened.  But, I’m not…because:

  1. I know Who is in control.  God is.
  2. I’ve met hundreds of people of faith on-line.

If you think God’s children are outnumbered, please know this.  We aren’t.

As much as man tries to remove God from things, He’s still there.  Man’s not that powerful.

Light tends to be the brightest in the darkest of situations.  When the light shines after a storm, we realize the storm was much darker than it appeared while in it.

We cannot control the masses.  But, we each can do our part by being a “city on the hill”, shining God’s light to others.  Your home, my home, can be mini cities on hills.  Isn’t that a wonderful thought?  Think of the glow sticks in the video.  If each home that holds God as their Lord had a big glow stick on the rooftop, just think of the light that would shine!

There is great hope…for our cities…our states…our country.  That hope is the Lord.

Blessings~

The Influencer

There are many things we could discuss about creating the home we love to live in.  It’s much deeper than creating a physically pleasing environment.

While we put great hope in our government, loving living where we do has much more to do with us than our governors.

A couple of days ago, someone I follow on Instagram posted this quote by Barbara Bush.

Your success as a family, our success as a society,
depends not on what happens in the White House
but on what happens inside YOUR HOUSE.
by Barbara Bush

Are you like most women of the world?  Do you spend many hours of your days looking at an electronic screen of some sort?  TV, laptop, iPad, phone…?  (Don’t we all?)

Do you rush from here to there with a fully loaded schedule?  Weren’t those electronics promising to save you time?  Look at us instead.  We jam more and more into our lives without truly taking notice of our influence.

Women of faith or not, we’re very much like the world in some ways – or possibly in many ways.

Shine the Light of Jesus

How do you strive to be different?  What do you bring to the dinner table at night for meaningful  discussion?

We learn new things each day, and often simply by osmosis.  Consider this:

Are you learning new things intentionally?

Maybe you’re already using what you know to be good, honorable, and true to influence the world – your world.  And that’s great!  We all should influence our children and loved ones in the best way we know how – by example, in love, and with intention.

My question is this:

When we’re looking at TV, laptop, or i-something,
are we learning anything meaningful?
Is it simply time set aside for mind-numbing brain vacations?

If you’re a child of God, you’ll understand this.  I challenge you today to do more.  Spend more time reading, learning, and studying God’s truths.  God’s Holy Bible gives us instruction for living obediently.

Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me.
And because they love me, my father will love them.
And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.  (John 14:21)

Those who love the Lord obey Him.  We are called to righteousness without compromise.

Our society no longer takes a firm stand on Godly living.  But, women of faith are called to live it by making God-honoring choices, even though it’s not popular.  We’re called to hold true to strong core beliefs based on God’s Holy Word.

Your influence begins at home.

How are you faring?  Do you see yourself as an influencer?  Are you standing strong?  (This question is for myself, as well.)

Blessings~

A Gift For Your Friends

One of my friends sent me an awesome gift a couple of years ago.

What I received was a stack of 3″ x 5″ index cards with a Bible verse written on each card.  They each have a hole punched through the top left corner.  A key ring type carabiner holds them all together neatly, making it easy to leaf through them and read.

The verses my friend wrote were filled with God’s promises.  In my “day of trouble” at the time, my friend knew just what I needed to hear – and read.

Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me. (Psalm 50:15)

As I read over the cards each day, the Lord strengthens me.  What a gift!

Over time, I added to the collection of verses, even using different colored cards sometimes.  It would be nice to assign a different color to each type of verse, but I’m way not organized enough for that!  But, maybe you are.  😉

Some cards have two verses because the second verse was necessary for getting the full impact of what God is saying.

Surely you can see that the cards are helpful for praying scripture and scripture memorization, too.

I share this with you today because it’s a tool and an encouragement.  You could make one for yourself and, while you’re at it, write more than one card for each verse.  You’d have extra copies to make duplicate verse “leaflets” for your friends.

It would be neat to give your friends a card stack with these 16 verses about friendship…and then they can add to the verses from there.  Or, you could do like my friend, and write verses that offer promises, give strength, things that build her faith.

So, what do you think?  Is this something you’d like to have – or to give?

Blessings~

P.S.  If my faith is something you don’t understand, this  will help clear things up for you.

Do You Not See It?

As I shared earlier this week, during my leg/ankle issues I wondered if God had a big change in mind.  Was He taking me to something new?

Isaiah 43:19

Change can be scary.  Are you facing a change?  Maybe a change in this new year?

Sometimes changes are sudden, even unexpected.  Those types of changes can be so hard!  But, we are assured that God has already begun His work in those changes.

God’s in our new pathway already, preparing our way.

Let’s look at the entire verse.

For I am about to do something new.
See, I have already begun!
Do you not see it?  I will make a pathway through the wilderness.
I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.  (Isaiah 43:19)

Does that comfort you?

…a pathway through the wilderness…

…rivers in the dry wasteland…

God is there to guide us through each change.  He provides for our pathway and our sustenance in it, our rivers.  What assurance!

You may have noticed comments on posts now and then by Mrs. Libba Criddle.  She was a fellow church member and was always such an encouragement to others, including me.

On New Year’s eve afternoon, HH received a text that Mrs. Criddle had died suddenly just shortly before.

She hadn’t been ill, and there was no warning, health-wise.  She just slumped over and quit breathing.  Done.  She endured no suffering.  What a blessing!  If given a choice, that’s how I’d want to go.

Ponder that for a minute, would you?  What would it be like to quietly check out of this world and meet Jesus?

While I’ll miss Mrs. Criddle, I’d never ask her to give up her new location.  She’s in heaven with the Lord – hallelujah!

Her family is suffering, and they have a sudden change, a new pathway through a wilderness of grief.  God is faithful, and He will see them through, providing His rivers along the way.  Her husband acknowledges rivers already, beginning immediately after her passing.  What a confirmation of God’s steadfast love and His comfort.

Perhaps you or your family members are facing a change, a hardship, or pain.  Watch for the Lord’s direction, the rivers He’ll provide along the way.

Let’s also consider good changes we encounter.  Good or bad, there’s unfamiliarity in it…new steps in the new pathway.  We make careful choices as we take the new steps.

Sometimes we don’t recognize what God’s doing right away.  The verse asks,

Do you not see it?

All we must do is wait and watch.  God is always doing something new.  Are you aware of it?  Do you not see it?

Blessings~

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

You know how it is.  You discover a product that you love, and you want to tell all your friends!  I’ve wanted to share some favorite things for quite a while now, and today is the day.  What better way to start the new year, eh?

Number One…(drum roll)…Ralph Lauren sheets.  I’ve had a set for a year or two, and they’ve held up very well.  They’re my favorite set of sheets in the entire house – soft yet crisp cool, clean, 100% cotton – not flimsy like others I’ve tried.  Here’s a similar set I found on Amazon.

Ralph Lauren 4-piece Sheet Set 100% Cotton

Although I bought my Ralph Lauren sheets at Tuesday Morning, I’ve had trouble finding more of them there.

If you see any, grab them quickly.  I shop for good sheets with a high thread count at T. J. Maxx and Tuesday Morning.  My goal price is $50 for a king set of sheets.  The Ralph Lauren king set was $60, a little of a splurge.  I discovered the extra ten bucks is nothing in comparison to the difference in quality – well worth it!

These Ralph Lauren sheets on Amazon* are a higher price.  Here’s the link for easy access, unless you prefer scavenging through piles of sheet sets at T. J. Maxx and Tuesday Morning.

Number Two is our TV viewing through streaming with this Roku device.  We have an antenna for local channels, and the Roku from Amazon* gives us many more viewing choices.

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=curtqueecre0b-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B015YF5YIS&asins=B015YF5YIS&linkId=cf924aed632341374983c371a4a75e71&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff

Free Amazon movies and TV series viewing is a bonus with an Amazon Prime* account.  You can also view newer releases for a small fee.  We never do that, though.  (El-cheapoes-we-are!}

My Number Three favorite is listening to audio books on Audible*.  For a small monthly fee, you get a credit once each month to apply to an audio book purchase.  Most books are one credit, thankfully, and I get a book each month with the credit I receive.

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=curtqueecre0b-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B00NB86OYE&asins=B00NB86OYE&linkId=d997bbabff0a6da26e66901039a432eb&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff

Number Four is a carrying purse for my phone and ear buds for hands-free and pocket-free listening while working around my home (you know – laundry, cooking, cleaning, and even sewing).  This purse on Amazon* is similar to mine, which was a gift.  The cross-body strap helps it hug against your body while bending over, “wiping those toilets clean without a splash-down”, ladies!

//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=curtqueecre0b-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B0188HQ7Y4&asins=B0188HQ7Y4&linkId=9c19e8e143fb5a8369384b6450c1daa5&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff

Number Five is a favorite personal hygiene item.  For years, I washed my hair every single day of my life.  Not good for hair, but essential when you have especially oily hair.  With Millcreek Botanicals Aloe Vera Shampoo, I’m able to wash my hair every two days, sometimes three.  Woohoo!

You can buy Millcreek products at GNC, but they often are out of stock on my favorite, Aloe Vera.  I find it easy to order on Amazon*, and it’s a better deal when purchased with conditioner.

If you like seeing what makes life better here at Hood Manor, I could share more products as I run across new things that are wonderful for making life more pleasant.

Isn’t that a wonderful thought?  Don’t we all wish for life to be more pleasant?

Blessings~
